Tutorial Five:
Making Flexible Surfaces Enamel Receptive

Description

The proper use of TiCote Clear Primer Barrier Coat on flexible surfaces, both natural and synthetic.

Supplies

TiCote Clear Primer Barrier Coat (4331010 Gloss and 4331011 Flat)

Directions

This procedure is applicable on leather, leatherettes and naugahydes, canvas duck products, banner materials that have not been previously ERC treated, and most commercial and sign grade awning and umbrella materials. Always test for material compatibility and adhesion in an inconspicuous area, such as behind a hem or seam.

Clean the surface first with a clean rag that is dampened, but not wet, with rubbing alcohol. Allow 30-45 minutes for the surface to dry, and apply the TiCote either by brush (foam brushes work well in most cases) or by wiping on a thin film with a rag. Never allow the TiCote to "pool" on horizontal surfaces or run on vertical surfaces; a thin, light coat is all that is needed. You can also mix the gloss (4331010) and Flat (4331011) product together in various ratios to achieve finishes ranging from eggshell to semi gloss. Allow the TiCote to dry three to four hours.

The surface is now enamel receptive and ready for lettering with 1 Shot Lettering Enamels. Never use 1 Shot 4007 Hardener on a flexible surface that has been treated with TiCote.

Precautions

Do not apply TiCote in the direct sun on larger, exterior projects (such as awnings, umbrellas and tonneau covers). Always cover an entire project or panel with TiCote; do not stop short of a seam or edge, or only prime where you intend to add lettering or graphics. Always coat from "edge to edge" or "seam to seam" on any surface. While TiCote dries clear, there may be a slight variation between the finish sheen of the treated and untreated surface.

This procedure and product recommendation has been proven to be effective in both a controlled lab as well as under standard shop conditions. It is always advisable, especially when trying a new procedure, to create a test panel first to try this application on prior to attempting to achieve optimum results on a given project. 1 Shot and Matthews Paint are not responsible for any failed attempts or product damages or failures caused by product use or misuse, lack of thorough understanding of and proper execution of the above procedure, or other unforeseen or unplanned for circumstances.
